One of the things that we see at the heart of narcissism is that those individuals don’t really empathize with other people. They’re not focused on you, how anything feels to you or what your needs are. You feel like you exist for them, and you don’t feel like a person. You are an object.
Narcissists think they’re special. They’re like a fish that doesn’t know it’s wet. Dr. Henry Cloud talks about the different types of narcissism, the roles they play in our lives and how to respond to these individuals who cause us pain.
If you’ve ever been hurt by a narcissist, know that the feelings you have are real. Come to terms with what you’re feeling and the cause of hurt. From there, prepare yourself accordingly if you engage further.
When a narcissist hears no, they act like something awful has been done to them. It's as if you didn’t see their “specialness” they expect everyone to recognize. Now, all of a sudden, you become the problem. But you don't have to accept that reality.
